Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia. It affects men and women and is the second leading cause of cancer death. However, around 90% of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated if detected early.

The Australian Government has recently lowered the age for participating in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program from 50 to 45. People aged 45-49 can now request a bowel cancer screening kit by either calling the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program on 1800 627 701 or submitting a webform via their website – //ncsr.gov.au/boweltest The program will continue to send bowel cancer screening kits to eligible people aged 50-74 as previously.

If you have a family history or genetic condition associated with bowel cancer, you may need a screening colonoscopy as a precaution. An endoscopy is the most reliable means available to detect cancer in the bowel.
